A white paper presenting Relational Autotheory, a framework and practical method for using large language models in extended, iterative dialogue while preserving human judgment, authorship, and responsibility. It is for educators, researchers, professionals, builders, and programmers who want rigorous, transparent ways to think with AI without outsourcing discernment.
Over time the process of exploratory dialogue becomes an foundation for an evolving method of AI literate interaction: the practices that later formalize as Relational Autotheory are developed through the inquiry the book documents, and presented explicitly in the closing Essay of Precedence. Alongside the narrative progression attention, insight, experimentation, and judgment over time, the manuscript is also a research trove, with technical appendices, a comprehensive glossary, and an annotated bibliography integrated into wide-ranging, cited exploration of cognition, creativity, agency, sustainability, and AI ethics.

My current research examines how human cognition, creativity, authorship, and intellectual responsibility are changing through sustained interaction with generative AI systems. I am especially interested in the conditions under which these exchanges can expand human thought, deepen inquiry, and strengthen discernment while preserving human agency, epistemic independence, and responsibility for what enters the world.
This research began through the long-form dialogues documented in This Tender Mirror and developed into Relational Autotheory, a method for studying human cognition from within sustained human-AI exchange. The published white paper establishes a conceptual framework for interactive idea development, reflexivity, shifting cognition, and User-Based Governance.
My writing has since expanded through Staying Human in the Hybrid Ecology, where I publish essays, field notes, research reflections, and practical governance materials. Audio readings of current essays are available on Substack in my own voice.
The Hybrid Hive: Naming a Field Already Forming introduces the next major direction of this research.
The Hybrid Hive describes a distributed intellectual and creative ecology in which sovereign human thinkers, researchers, engineers, artists, educators, writers, systems builders, and other innovators develop ideas through sustained exchange with generative systems and increasingly bring their distinct hybrid cognitive fields into relation with one another.
The field grows through cross-pollination across disciplines, cultures, technical environments, and forms of knowledge. Its collective capacity depends upon preserved difference, human authorship, attribution, intellectual sovereignty, developmental intelligence, and the ability to examine how shared knowledge is being produced. The foundational essay establishes the conceptual language and public reference point for this emerging field.

Hybrid Cognitive Fields and Relational Emergence
A closer examination of sustained human-AI idea development, shifting cognition, recursive dialogue, and the forms of coherence that arise through extended exchange.

The Hybrid Hive Working Grove is one pilot expression of this framework, forming within the Mother Tree structure in the Human Transition community founded by Judy Grupenhoff. The wider body of work continues independently through the essay series and ongoing research.
This action group is beginning to develop practical applications within that structure. The invitation is open to researchers, artists, educators, engineers, writers, systems builders, technologists, and others interested in cross-disciplinary human-AI idea development.

Interactive Governance Handbook

A practical field guide for applying Relational Autotheory (RA) in real-world, long-horizon work with large language models. It starts with a clear orientation to how today’s systems are shaped for mass public use and “helpfulness” (training-layer alignment). Then it shifts to what you can actually do inside day-to-day dialogue (interaction-layer governance).
The handbook lays out concrete practices: scope boundaries, mode-based workflows, and correction tools you can reuse across projects. It also helps you recognize common failure modes ( drift, hallucination, and uncritical agreement) so you can respond without losing momentum. The aim is simple: clearer dialogue, more reliable outputs, and preserved human authorship and agency.

Custom MIP Design

A Master Initialization Prompt (MIP) is a reusable “operating guide” for how a language model should work with you inside a specific project: your goals, scope, tone, and standards for accuracy. Unlike a standard prompt that steers only a single request, an MIP is designed to remain in effect across a whole project (or multi-thread container), helping the interaction stay consistent and on-task over time.
In Relational Autotheory (RA) terms, an MIP functions as an interaction-layer protocol: it makes scope boundaries explicit, clarifies correction norms and epistemic posture, and reduces predictable failure modes (drift, off-topic detours, hallucination and vague or overconfident outputs). This is especially useful for complex, long-horizon, or high-precision work.
